           He let the dust fall away from him like the summer sun felled the harvest. It was time to return to the earth what was the earth's.

what an arresting illustration! (that sparks so many thoughts)
The two brief sentences support it wonderfully...plain, declarative, and full of implication, just like the land on which we all tread, of which we are all part, to which we are all inevitably connected.
I imagine that the temptation to express more deeply, more broadly the thoughts and feelings the picture prompted in you was strong. I'm grateful that you simply introduced us to the subject and subtly nudged we readers to explore our own reactions.
