Just DO it.

.
When I was... nine...I asked my dad, "Can I have your movie camera - that old, wind-up 8 millimeter camera that was in your drawer?" And he goes, "Sure, take it." And I took it and I started making movies with it and I started being as creative as I could, and never once in my life did my parents ever say, "What you're doing is a waste of time." Never.

And I grew up, I had teachers, I had colleagues, I had people that I worked with all through my life who always told me what you're doing is not a waste of time. So that was normal to me that it was OK to do that.

I know there are kids out there that don't have that support system so if you're out there and you're listening, listen to me: If you want to be creative, get out there and do it. It's not a waste of time. Do it. OK?

I truly agree.

Kids should be encouraged to discover and learn areas they're good at.

Compared to kids 20 years ago. youngsters now have so much access to technology, arts and what have you. It's such a shame if they do not take advantage of what their generation has given to them on a silver platter.

They just have to do it, as you say :)

Nice post. I am 42 and my parents are still never even slightly intrigued by what I do. Never will they act as if they are happy for one of my accomplishments. Some people are afraid to see others out succeed them. I wanted my daughter to grow up better than me, smarter and more creative.

Yes, this is true. I had a sister-in-law who received a "D" in art in second grade. She spent the rest of her life thinking she wasn't creative. DO WHAT YOU WANT!

Mark,I find your sister's story so sad, since we are All creators. I hope your sister comes to realize that her Art teacher is deserving of an F ..
