I am struggling with this quote. I can agree with the first line, especially “refining of the sense of truthfulness”. Refinement of truth is not, by my view, just the purview of the artist, unless we cast a broader definition of the “artist” beyond those just involved in “art”. So from this perspective then, Willa Cather’s use of the word “stupid” is for me objectionable. Truth can be easy as generally being truthful should also be easy. Refining and perhaps capturing truth in an art form, this I can see to be tough. As I said, I am struggling with this quote. What am I not seeing here?
